Biography

Helen Wechsler joined IMLS in December 2009 and currently serves as a supervisory grants management specialist in the Office of Museum Services where she heads a team focusing on grants that address learning experiences in museums.  She has also been involved in IMLS initiatives involving 21st century skills, early learning, STEM, digital media and learning, and making. She came to IMLS from the American Architectural Foundation where she served as Vice President for Communication and Partnership Development. Prior to that, she spent 17 years at the American Association of Museums where she directed Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects focusing on institutional planning and leadership.  She also served as Director of International and Ethics Programs at AAM directing an international museum partnership program, overseeing the development of ethics guidelines for the museum field, and serving on two U.S. delegations negotiating international agreements on cultural property topics. Helen holds an M.A. in the history of Asian art from the University of Michigan and has lectured and published on Hindu temple architecture.
